Live in an apartment or condominium? While the City of Austin provides curbside compost service for residential customers, multi-family housing properties can feel left out, but Break it Down has got you covered!
HOW IT WORKS:
We’ll place one 64-gallon green cart next to the trash/recycling dumpsters at your complex with a simple combo lock so only folks that are interested in composting have access – this helps keep the waste stream pure. You’ll collect your organic waste indoors however you like: e.g., a paper bag in the freezer, a bucket under the sink, a pail on the counter with a compostable bag – totally up to you. And when it’s full, you’ll take it out to the larger bin. Each week we’ll come by to switch out the full bin for a rinsed empty one so it doesn’t get funky. That’s it!
WHAT CAN I COMPOST?
We can accept all food waste including meat, bones, and dairy, Certified Compostable serviceware, paper towels/napkins, coffee grounds, pizza boxes, even wooden popsicle sticks!
WHERE DOES THE COMPOST GO?
We sort the material for contamination by hand, and then it goes to our partner facility that finishes the material into soil amendments for local agriculture and gardening (for sale at Natural Gardener!). This has so many benefits – it not only reduces methane emissions from landfills, but it reduces local farmers’ dependence on problematic synthetic fertilizers.
HOW DO I SIGN UP?
Because we work with commercial entities, the service will be contracted through your apartment management. Please contact us to start the conversation!
